Lebanon marks 21st anniversary of Israeli invasion
Lebanon, Politics, 3/15/1999
Marking the 14th anniversary of the Day of Solidarity with the Citizens of South Lebanon and the Western Bekaa, Lebanese popular and official figures carried out activities and rallies in various parts of Lebanon.
In al-Nabatiyah, the Lawyers Union held a sit-in in solidarity with the people of the south on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of the first Israeli invasion of south Lebanon. The Lebanese lawyers called on the international community to pressure Israel to implement UN resolution 425, which calls for Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon, unconditionally.
In Baalbeck, cultural and social associations held a mass rally. The speakers called on international public opinion and the United Nations Security Council to exert more efforts to implement UN resolution 425.
At the conclusion of the rally, the participants sent a note to the United Nations' secretary general demanding the application of UN resolution 425, in order to halt the Israeli aggressions against Lebanon, to condemn the Israeli government's state terrorism and to lift the repressive Israeli measures imposed on the citizens of south Lebanon.
On this context, Lebanese Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss said that Israel's repeated aggressions would not make Lebanon give up all-out backing for the Lebanese resistance. In a statement to Sawt al-Arab radio aired on Sunday the Lebanese premier said the Lebanese resistance operations are "a legitimate right enjoyed by any state whose lands are occupied."
For his part, the Lebanese chairman of the Supreme Islamic Shiite Council Sheikh Muhammad Mahdi Shamseddine, said in a statement issued in Beirut on Sunday to mark the Day of solidarity with South Lebanon and the western Bekaa that Israel would not achieve any political, economic and security gains in Lebanon.
He praised the steadfastness of the Lebanese people standing firm against Israel's attacks, the Lebanese resistance and army and the Lebanese prisoners held in Israeli jails.
