UAE criticizes Iran's behavior over island issue
United Arab Emirates-Iran, Politics, 3/15/1999
United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Rashid Abdullah al-Nu'eimi has asserted that the question of Iran's occupation of three disputed Gulf islands is still escalated due to Iran's behavior regarding these islands.
In the inaugural speech at the 70th session of the meetings of the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council member states, which opened in Riyadh on Sunday, al-Nu'eimi said, "What has been carried out by Iran is viewed as imposing an illegal situation and an attempt to perpetuate the occupation of the three islands," noting that the military maneuvers carried out by Iran are considered a violation of the United Arab Emirates' sovereignty over these islands.
The UAE FM called upon the Iranian government to respond to the repeated calls made by UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al-Nahyan and the GCC council, the Gulf Cooperation Council states, the Damascus Declaration member states and the Arab League on the need to settle the disputes over the islands by peaceful means or to resort to the International Court of Justice.
On relations with Iran, al-Nu'eimi said that at a time when the GCC member states "are maintaining intensive contacts for building confidence, Iran, on the contrary, carried out provocative and unacceptable acts."
Concerning the situation in Iraq, al-Nu'eimi stressed the need of Iraq's completing the implementation of all relevant UN resolutions, especially concerning the release of the Kuwaiti detainees and prisoners held in Iraq.
