Summit by President Mubarak and King Abdullah as Electric grid between Jordan and Egypt opens
Jordan-Egypt, Economics, 3/15/1999
An official source in Cairo said on Sunday that King Abdullah Bin al-Hussein will visit Egypt on Tuesday where he will inaugurate together with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak the electricity grid line between the two states.
President Mubarak and King Abdullah will inaugurate the electricity grid in the Egyptian area of Taba, the first phase of an electricity grid project between Africa and Asia. The project will link Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Turkey and Iraq, whereas Israel was ruled out due to its intransigence in the Middle East peace process.
Setting up the bilateral grid line between Egypt and Jordan was completed at a cost of US $500 million. It was financed by the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, which has Kuwait as a headquarters.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa said the meeting between President Mubarak and King Abdullah will address the Arab scene, especially of peace process and bilateral coordination and cooperation between the two states, pointing out that the new power grid is part of an ambitions plan to create an Arab common market and is considered one of the important steps toward Arab economic cooperation.
