UNICEF - Sudan slavery

The head of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Carlo Bellamy, said yesterday that efforts to end slavery in Sudan through buying the freedom of slaves would not work, because they do not address the underlying causes. "UNICEF believes the main effort," to end slavery, "should be directed at enlisting the support of the warring parties in ending the armed conflict and all its practices," she said, indicating a willingness to work with the Sudanese government on the issue despite the failure of earlier governmental initiatives.
