Israeli rabbi and the Golan Heights
Regional-Israel, Politics, 3/12/1999
Jewish rabbi Ariel Daree has said, "Since we had returned Sinai to Egypt, why has the Golan not been returned to the Syrians for the sake of peace?"
In an interview with the French magazine Le Novelle Observator Daree added, "I think that following the Israeli elections a national unity government will be formed and that government will be obliged to proceed in the Middle East peace process, and therefore a great deal of the efforts will be dedicated towards Syria because there should be a solution for the problem in Lebanon, where there is no military solution. We know that there is only a political solution there that should be directly discussed with the Syrians."
Replying to a question on Syria asking first for the Golan, Daree added, "Yes, if we choose to leave the Golan this will create a security problem. However, this matter cannot be surpassed."
When Daree was asked why Netanyahu and Barak did not go further to such proposals, Daree said that after the elections Netanyahu and Barak will speak in a different way and that, "I am confident that the Golan should be restored back to the Syrian against achieving peace. This matter will be more difficult in the West Bank where there will be a Palestinian state."
Daree continued that the Palestinians have to know that Israel will never go back to the border of 1967 and that Jerusalem will never be divided, but a "clever solution" can be found for Jerusalem, noting that this matter takes time.
The French magazine said that Daree (40) is described in Israel is "maker of kings" and that he is at the meantime the advisor of the greater Rabbi Obadia Yousef.
Daree also chairs the Israeli Shas religious party which within less ten years became the third political power in Israel.
