Morocco and Iran for enhanced economic and cultural relations
Morocco-Iran, Politics, 3/11/1999

Morocco and Iran expressed hope that their relations in the fields of economy, finance and culture would be enhanced

This came at a meeting in Rabat on Wednesday between Moroccan Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi, and vice-speaker of the Iranian Shoura council (parliament) Hassan Rouhani, who is currently visiting Morocco.

Youssoufi hailed on the occasion Iran's position regarding Morocco's territorial integrity and underlined the kingdom's contribution to dialogue between various civilizations and cultures and its role in propagating a genuine image of Islam.

Hassan Rouhani, who is also chairman of the Iranian council's foreign committee, called for the promotion of investments between the two countries' public and private sectors after the Iranian parliament ratifies the law on the encouragement of foreign investments and the opening of foreign banks' branches in the country.

The Iranian vice-speaker equally pleaded for the encouragement of tourist flows between the two countries and for consolidating cooperation in matters of struggle against drug trafficking.

The two sides also discussed the situation in the Islamic world. Rouhani underscored the key role Morocco plays in consolidating cooperation among Islamic states.

Hassan Rouhani, whose country is holding the rotating chairmanship of the Islamic summit, had told reporters upon arrival his talks with Moroccan parliamentarians are taking place on the eve of the creation of the council of Islamic parliaments. The council's creation will be proclaimed in the coming months in Tehran.

The Iranian delegation that is visiting Morocco this March 9-13 comprises officials from the Foreign Ministry, the Supreme National Security Council (the highest decision-making body in matters of security and defense) and members of the Shoura council.

Between March 15 and 21, Rabat and Meknes will host an Iranian cultural week, cosponsored by the Moroccan cultural affairs ministry and the Iranian department of guidance and culture.

The event will feature two music shows by an Iranian band as well as exhibitions of carpets, calligraphy and handicraft items.
