Yemen, Politics, 3/11/1999
A Yemeni extremist group released a statement yesterday in which it called itself the new leader of the Aden - Abyan Islamic Army, and refused in its statement the agreement reached at by another group related to Abu El-Hassan El-Mohader, who is currently on trial for kidnapping and killing Western tourists in Abyan, with the Yemeni government.
The statement said this army launched a strong war against the government and that the leadership of the Aden - Abyan Army took Al Jawf governerate in the north as its headquarter after security forces chased them from Abyan and Shebewa.
Press reports referred last week to confidential discussions among Yemen's official leadership and leaders of the Aden - Abyan Army that aim at containing the organization's members in governmental jobs in return for a pledge to abandon violence and terrorism.
Abu El-Hassan El-Mohader directed a warning to the United States and British ambassadors to leave Yemen as soon as possible.
