US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Karl Inderfurth told the US Senate Appropriations Committee on Foreign Operations that exiled Saudi Osama Bin Laden remains in Afghanistan, although the Taleban had reported that they did not know Bin Laden's whereabouts. "Despite hollow protestations that Osama Bin Laden is Rmissing,' there is no evidence he has left Afghanistan. Our experts and other informed observers believe he remains in Taleban-controlled territory," Inderfurth said. Go

The United Nations announced yesterday that nearly 190 million barrels of Iraqi crude oil have been exported so far during the phase of the oil-for-food agreement with Iraq, which started on November 26, 1998 and will last until May 23, 1999. The Security Council Sanctions Committee has also approved in this period $230 million worth of contracts for spare parts and equipment out of a total allocation of $300 million during this phase of the program. A delegation from the Group of 15 Developing Countires (G-15) comprising 15 businessmen will visit Cairo on Friday to look at the new industrial cities and convene meetings with Egyptian investors and members of the Egyptian association for developing exports. Go

The French group Alstom has struck a deal worth 550 million Dirhams with the Moroccan railway company (ONCF/state-owned) to set up a signaling system for the Moroccan railway network. Under the deal, financed up to 330 million DH in the frame of the French-Moroccan financial protocol, Alstom will supply and install the signaling system on the railway network. The works will be completed over 43 months. Go

An Arab Gulf official who refused to be identified has announced that the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council will hold their periodic meeting on March 14 in Riyadh to discuss mainly the Iraqi issue before the convening of the Arab League AL ministerial council due to be held on March 17 and-18. Speaker of the Turkish Parliament Hikmet Cezkin arrived in Israel on Tuesday in a four-day official visit. The Israeli radio said that Cezgin will hold talks with the Israeli President Ezer Weizman, the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Speaker of the Israeli Knesset on bilateral relations between Israel and Turkey in various fields and the development of the Middle East peace process. Following his visit to Israel, Cezgin will visit the Palestinian self-rule areas where he will meet with several Palestinian officials. Go

The Sudanese daily al-Alwan (colors) said on Tuesday quoting an official in the southern province of Darfour that some 11 persons were killed and another five were wounded in a land mine explosion in this region. The source stated that the five wounded are in critical condition, including an engineer who works in a highway construction workshop. The paper indicated that the land-mine was planted by rebels in southern Sudan. Go
