Environment protection fair held in Casablanca
Regional-Morocco, Environment, 3/10/1999
A fair on environment protection dubbed "Enviro Maroc 99" is being held in Casablanca this March 8-10. The fair, co-sponsored by Morocco and Germany, is the first of the kind ever held in the kingdom.
Enterprises dealing with used water treatment, waste recycling and management, air quality, renewable energies and other environment-related sectors are participating in the fair.
In a statement to MAP, an official from the Moroccan secretariat of state in charge of environment, Mehdi Chalabi, said Morocco produces annually 3.98 million tons of kitchenmidden, 930,000 tons of industrial refuse and 18,000 tons of hospital waste.
He said the rate of kitchenmidden collecting ranges between 70 and 100%, while only 3% of waste is recycled.
The official, who deplored the lack of a rational strategy for waste management and the absence of legal texts to regulate waste management, stressed the importance of environment protection as an economic and ecological stake and called for involving all the components of the society, including children, in environment preservation.
