Moroccan house speaker calls for Mediterranean charter to avert wars in the region
Regional-Morocco, Politics, 3/8/1999

Speaker of the Moroccan House of representatives (Lower house), Abdelouahed Radi, called for the elaboration of a Mediterranean charter to avert wars in the Mediterranean region.

Radi launched his call on Sunday before the conference of speakers of Euro-Mediterranean parliaments held in Palma de Majorque, Spain, and that was opened by King Juan Carlos.

Radi who pointed out that the settlement of Mediterranean countries' problems requires political courage, deplored the absence of Lebanon and Syria which decided not to take part in the conference to protest Israel's intransigent stands and the carrying on of the occupation of Syrian and Lebanese territories by Tel Aviv.

The speaker of the Moroccan House also expressed amazement at the fact that Libya has not been invited to the gathering.

Radi had been elected last October in Brussels co-chairman of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary forum that gathers MPs from the 15 members of the European Union and the 12 Mediterranean countries signatory of the Barcelona Declaration.

The forum is meant to be a platform for dialogue on Euro-Mediterranean partnership. It submits the results of its debates to the parliamentary institutions and foreign departments of the member countries.

Speaker of the chamber of advisors (upper house of the Moroccan parliament) is also part of the Moroccan delegation to the Euro-Mediterranean parliamentary conference.
