Gaddafi confers with Arab League chief
Libya-Regional, Politics, 3/8/1999
Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gaddafi received at his residence (a tent installed at al-Qubah palace) in Cairo on Sunday, the secretary general of the Arab League, Esmat Abdul Meguid.
The two sides reviewed the efforts exerted to settle the Lockerbie incident and the role Libya asked the AL to play as a direct mediator between it and the UN Security Council and secretary general, as well as other sides concerned, including the US and Britain.
Earlier, the US expressed its desire to unify the channels of contacts to reach an agreement with Libya and for these efforts to be concentrated only in the hands of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Arab diplomatic sources in Cairo said that among the proposals discussed by Mubarak and Gaddafi were the composition of an Arab delegation comprising three foreign ministers to visit the capitals concerned with Lockerbie to call for giving Tripoli a three-month grace period to complete the agreement on handing over the two Libyans accused of being involved in the Lockerbie incident and to ensure Washington and London's response to the Libyan demands for a fair trial for the two Libyans.
During the two past days, neither Egyptian nor Libyan officials made definite statements on achieving a progress in the Lockerbie issue.
Egyptian Minister of Information Safwat al-Sharif said that Mubarak and Gaddafi reviewed contacts and efforts made by Egypt, Saudi Arabia and South Africa.
Meanwhile, a Libyan official statement released following the talks between Gaddafi and Abdul Meguid said the meeting dealt with the need to support Lebanon in confrontation of the continued Israeli aggression and the firm support of the AL for Iraq against US attacks.
The statement added that Abdul Meguid "praised the role played by President Mandela and our brothers in Saudi Arabia in reaching a solution in the Lockerbie incident."
