Syrian FM official: Syria to continue contacts to alleviate sufferings of the Iraqis
Syria, Politics, 3/6/1999

Answering a question put by SANA's political editor on the results of contacts regarding the convening of the Arab follow-up committee, an official source at the Syrian foreign ministry said on Friday, that in its capacity as chairman of the consultation meeting of Arab Foreign ministers, Syria, in coordination with the secretary general of the Arab League, has had intensive discussions in order to convene a meeting for the committee that would help in lifting economic sanctions imposed on Iraq.

This would, they hoped, put an end to the sufferings of the Iraqi people. The Syrian FM source added that these contacts revealed that certain Arab League member states still prefer to convene meetings to provide the chance for further consultation and the exchange of views, especially during the forthcoming meeting of the AL council due to be held on March 17 and 18 in Cairo.

The Syrian source added that Syria will continue its contacts with the AL chief to ensure the success of the efforts aimed at putting an end to the sufferings of the people of Iraq.
