Israeli sources commented on Lebanese Premier statements
Lebanon, Politics, 3/6/1999
The Israeli radio said today that well-informed political sources at the court of the Israeli Prime Minister commented on what had been said by the Lebanese prime Minister Salim al Hoss to the BBC that "he will seek to prevent attacks to be made by the Hizbullah Party on Israel from the Lebanese territories if Israel will withdraw from South Lebanon, as saying that "Israel is concerned with deeds rather than statements and that it wants Lebanon to make moves that prove the determination of the Lebanese government to disarm the Hizbullah party and to foil aggressions made by its members on Northern Israel."
The political correspondent of the Israeli radio said that the Israeli political sources also explained that one of the needed steps is the redeployment of the Lebanese army in South Lebanon.
On Friday Al Hoss said that he will try to revive the truce treaty signed between Lebanon and Israel in 1949. The radio indicated that this is the first times in which a Lebanese official clearly expressed his readiness to provide security guarantees to Israel if it withdraws from the South.
Meantime, Israeli political sources in Jerusalem today called on the Lebanese government to sit on the negotiation table with Israel in order to reach a security agreement that will be conducive to the redeployment of the Lebanese army in South Lebanon and disarm the Hizbullah party. The Israeli radio today quoted these sources as saying that Israel at the meantime "does not seek to reach comprehensive peace agreement with Lebanon, rather to revive truce of 1949."
