Confrontation in Abyan with a group that tries to control mosque
Yemen, Local, 3/5/1999

The Yemeni police interfered in the province of Abyan to settle confrontations during which Klashinkov machine guns were used in the directorate of al-Jawf between a "predestination" Islamic group and the citizens over an attempt made by the group to occupy and seize a mosque in the area under the pretext that Islamic rituals are not fully performed in the mosque.

Well-informed sources in Yemen said sources in the local authorities in Abyan stressed that the disputes between citizens and the extremist group reached their peak on Thursday and developed into armed confrontations between the group and defenders of the mosque.

The interference of the police prevented killings between the two sides. The sources added that police arrested several persons involved in the confrontation from the two sides.
