Arafat to ask Clinton for US recognition of Palestinian right to self-determination

The secretary general of the Palestinian president's office, Al-Tayeb Abdul Rahim, has stated that Palestinian President Yasser Arafat will ask during his meeting with US President Bill Clinton on March 23 for official US recognition of the right of the Palestinians to self-determination.

In a statement to AFP Abdul Rahim added that the Palestinian leadership has not yet taken a final decision concerning the postponement of declaring the Palestinian state and that the PA intends to continue consultations and contacts with friendly countries before announcing its final position in this respect.

He asserted that whatever the decision to be taken is, the political status of the Palestinian areas after May 4 will not be like it is now.

He stated that the leading sides at the PLO, especially the executive committee and the central council will meet on a date close to May 4 in order to take proper decisions that will decide the new situation in the Palestinian areas.

Abdul Rahim did not give explanations on decisions to be taken by the PA, but he said that steps to be taken by the Palestinian government will be materialized in "putting Palestinian sovereignty into actual realization."
