Report: Iraqi opposition attacks in southern Iraq
Iraq, Politics, 3/4/1999
AFP reported that an Iraqi opposition movement has asserted that it attacked a headquarters for the intelligence and the Baath Party in the city of Karbala in Iraq in revenge for the assassination of a prominent Shiite man of religion in February.
In a statement to the United Arab Emirates UAE daily al-Itihad published in Dubai on Wednesday, chairman of the Higher Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, Ayatollah Muhammad Baqer al-Hakim, said his fighters waged on Saturday a successful military operation that targeted intelligence and party positions in Karbala, south of Baghdad.
Al-Hakim stated that four positions were attacked and that these attacks resulted in several killings. Al-Hakim continued that his movement will launch other attacks in revenge for killing Ayatollah Muhammad Sadeq al-Sader, one of the prominent Shiite figures in Iraq on February 19.
However, the Islamic revolution's higher council and other opposition parties reported three-day acts of confrontations in Shiite districts in Iraq following the assassination of al-Sader, whose death was blamed for the regime. For its part Baghdad had categorically denied any confrontation, stressing that the assassination of al-Sader intends to provoke sectarianism.
