Reports: Secret documents lost at the office of Israeli general
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 3/3/1999

A spokesman for the Israeli military police said that secret military documents were missing from the office of commander of the northern district in the Israeli Army, Gabi Ishkinazi.

Israeli Army radio said that, "The lost documents include top secret security information concerning the deployment of the Israeli Army in South Lebanon."

The radio report quoted the Israeli daily Haaretz as saying in its Tuesday issue that these documents were "lost from Ishkinazi's office for three weeks and that the military police which investigates this issue came to know about it just two weeks before."

Following the success of Lebanese resistance operations against the Israeli occupation forces, leaked news reports in Israel stated that the Lebanese resistance was able to penetrate the Israeli military leadership and intelligence systems and that the various Israeli security bodies started large-scale investigations to learn about the volume of such a leak.

Leader of the Israeli Army, Shaoul Mufaz, said that he believes: "There is a link between the stolen documents and the killing of Gen. Erez Gerstein" and another three Israelis in south Lebanon, but he refused to disclose what sort the stolen documents are."

Meanwhile, the Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot said "The stolen documents are very secret and the theft took place three weeks ago." Maj. Gen. Ishkinazi told Israeli Army radio that " the stolen documents do not include information relating to the military unity the Gerstein headed."
