France anxious over conditions in Iraq, Lebanon
Regional-France, Politics, 3/3/1999
France on Tuesday expressed deep anxiety over the escalated tensions in Iraq. It has asserted its readiness to help settle the Iraqi issue. The spokeswoman for the French Foreign Ministry said her country views the repeated military operations against Iraq as not "going in the direction that we would wish."
She added that France is rather looking for conditions that would be suitable for attaining full relations between Iraq and the UN.
Meanwhile, France has expressed deep concern over the conditions in south Lebanon and called for restraint. The French spokeswoman added quoting her foreign minister as saying "This situation serves as a reminder that part of the territory in South Lebanon has been occupied by the Israeli army for many years now. The Israeli army, for that reason, is subject to actions by Hezbollah guerrillas. It's one of the points of extreme tension in this region."
The French spokeswoman at the Foreign ministry said that the European Union had also expressed concern over the situation in south Lebanon. She added that the Europeans also called on all parties to stop confrontations.
