Moussa: Egypt against military strikes on Iraq
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 3/1/1999
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa has asserted that the Arab states do not support the military strikes against Iraq and that the Arab states are for a political and diplomatic solution and non- intervention in the internal affairs of Iraq, the interests of its people, its unity and lifting the embargo imposed on it.
In statements he made on Saturday as he stopped at Jeddah airport, the Egyptian foreign minister said that the forthcoming meeting of the Arab foreign ministers in March will discuss several issues, including the situation in the region and economic and cultural cooperation.
He denied proposing a new peace initiative in the Middle East.
Moussa stated that the current events in the region stress that the situation is very bad due to Israeli stubbornness, a matter which may obstruct or rather break the Middle East peace process.
Moussa warned that "Unless moves are attained forward to give the Middle East peace process a push forward, peace in the region will be vulnerable." He indicated that the moves should cover all tracks in compliance with the land-for-peace principle and the realization of a just and comprehensive peace for all.
The Egyptian foreign minister asserted that the Middle East question affects world peace and security and that the intervention of the UN and other countries, especially the US, is very effective to put the Middle East peace process into its right track.
