Lebanese president hails the liberation of Arnoun
Lebanon, Politics, 2/27/1999
Lebanese President Emile Lahoud on Friday stressed that the battle launched in liberating the town of Arnoun from the Israeli occupation forces "is part of the greater battle of liberation."
In his Friday meeting with several Lebanese parliamentarians, the Lebanese president added: "We must win this battle to ensure all suitable conditions and atmospheres, diplomatic, political or military, that should be used in the service of the battle for comprehensive liberation. "
Meanwhile, the Lebanese president asked the chairman of the April Understanding Monitoring Committee, Col. Maher al-Tufeili, to notify the US representative at the committee that the American delegate should inform the Israeli delegation that Lebanon holds Israel responsible for any casualties inflicted on the citizens of Arnoun.
This call advocated by Lahoud was expressed in his telephone call with al-Tufeili after the Israeli occupation forces and their allied militias at al-Shaqeif castle opened fire against the 2,000 Lebanese civilians, who entered the town of Arnoun of Friday afternoon after the civilians dismantled the barbed wire erected by the Israeli troops.
For his part, Lebanese Prime Minister Salim al-Hoss praised the students, who broke through the barbed wire barrier around Arnoun.
Today, the deputy chairman of the Higher Shiite Islamic Council in Lebanon, Sheikh Muhammad Qabalan, high-ranking Lebanese officials and crowds of citizens arrived in the newly-liberated town, where they had their prayers and then congratulated the citizens of the town over its liberation.
