Egypt succeeds in increasing orange exports by 25 percent
Egypt, Economics, 2/27/1999
In what seems like a text book example for how to increase exports of commodities, Egypt has managed to increase exports of one product by maintaining its shares of exports in traditional markets while finding and exploring for new markets for these commodities.
An Egyptian governmental statement announced today an increase in exports of Egyptian oranges to 120,000 tons during the last three months of last year, up from 90,000 tons for the same period of 1997 for an increase of 25%.
Egyptian Minister of Trade and Supply Ahmed Goweili said this increase is due to a marketing plan to regain the position of the Egyptian exports of oranges in its traditional markets while opening new markets for it.
Goweili also referred to an increase in exports to Arab markets from 80,000 tons of oranges in 1997/1998 to 97,000 thousand tons in the current season with an increase of 21%.
