AL condemns continued US, British aggression in Iraq
Regional-Iraq-International, Politics, 2/26/1999

The general secretariat of the Arab League has condemned the continued US and British aggressions against Iraq.

AL Assistant Secretary General for Arab Affairs Ahmad Bin Hali, who is also in charge of the Iraqi issue, said on Thursday in Cairo that the AL denounces and condemns the continued military operations in Baghdad or in the no-fly zones imposed by the US and Britain against the northern and southern parts of Iraq without international legitimacy backing.

Bin Hali called for canceling these areas, which came in a decision by the US and Britain that was made without specific Security Council approval.

Bin Hali said that Iraq's representative at the AL informed him on Thursday about the latest developments of conditions in Iraq. Bin Hali added that consultations with the Iraqi representative, Sultan al-Shawi, dealt with means of lifting the sufferings imposed on the Iraqi people and the efforts exerted in this respect.

For his part, al-Shawi said following his meeting with Bin Hali that the aggression against Iraq requires a position to be taken by the UN Security Council because this aggression threatens world peace and security.
