Tunisia develops cooperation with Portugal, Egypt and Yemen

Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio has asserted his country's desire to "intensify consultations with Tunisia and to benefit from all available potentials for boosting bilateral cooperation."
The Portuguese president explained during his meeting with the Tunisian Prime Minister Karoui during his recent visit to Lisbon, that Portugal intends to increase the volume of cooperation with Tunisia on the bilateral and regional levels within the context of the partnership agreement concluded by Tunisia and the European Union which began implementation in 1998.
On Wednesday, the Tunisian - Portuguese joint committee concluded its meeting under the chairmanship of the two countries' ministers of state for foreign affairs.
Tunisia said that among the most important of the decisions taken by the committee was an agreement on canceling double taxation in order to reactivate investment cooperation.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Tunisian sources asserted that during its coming meeting in the middle of March in Tunisia, the Tunisian-Egyptian higher committee will discuss the project of setting up a free trade zone similar to that established between Jordan and Egypt.
In March 1998, the Egyptian and Tunisian governments reached a free-exchange agreement and agreed on setting up an area for exchange during a transitional period that will continue until 2007. The agreement calls for gradual cancellation of taxes and customs fees on products of national origin.
On the other hand, the Tunisian minister of social affairs has signed with Yemeni Social Affairs Minister Muhammad Abdullah al-Batani an agreement to develop cooperation in the areas of vocational training and social care. Al-Batani is currently on an official visit to Tunisia.
