Palestinian official calls Arab and Muslim countries to purchase property in Jerusalem
Regional-Palestine, Politics, 2/25/1999
The Palestinian official in charge of the dossier of Jerusalem, Faysal Al-Husseini, called on Arab and Islamic countries to purchase real estate in the holy city.
Al-Husseini, who is member of the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, launched his call in the address he made before the international colloquy on the "future of Arab Jerusalem," currently held in Casablanca.
He stated that the Palestinians were in need of a financial assistance of $ 30 million to ensure success to the actions undertaken to thwart the Israeli schemes in Al-Quds.
The Palestinian official surveyed the various plans and measures hatched by Israel to Judaize the holy city and mentioned among others the attempts to isolate Jerusalem, the expulsion of the Palestinian inhabitants and their replacement by Jewish populations, and the construction of new settlements. He recalled in this regard that since 1993, Israel has built some 7,000 new housing units in Al-Quds.
Another participant had indicated that every year, Israel destroys 27 to 30 lodgings belonging to Palestinians.
After he stressed the importance of the city as a key element in the Middle East peace process, Al-Husseini said "Jerusalem might be a radiating sun in the Middle East, or else a black abyss that will swamp everything, even hopes."
