Jordanian foreign minister: Jordan is open on peace with Israel
Jordan, Politics, 2/25/1999

Jordanian Foreign Minister Abd al-Ilah al-Khatib told al-Ahram weekly newspaper today that Jordanian policy is steadfast on the Arab and international levels following the death of King Hussein last month.

Al-Khatib expressed his hope that the concerned parties in the Middle East peace process may reach a formula to avoid escalation in the area with the approach of the date for the Palestinian independent state's declaration on May 4.

Al-Khatib said, "We cannot underestimate the death of King Hussein, who ruled Jordan for 47 years, leaving us a great foundational treasure and the international relations."

He added, "Jordan held a relation with Israel that is determined by the peace treaty that was signed before the people with openness, and we believe that peace is the best choice available for all people of the area."
