Iraq calls for discussion of no-fly zones at Arab foreign ministers meeting
Iraq, Politics, 2/24/1999

Iraq call for the subject of the air embargo imposed by the United States and Britain without the specific agreement of the UN Security Council over southern and northern Iraq to be inserted into the agenda of 111th session of the Arab League foreign ministers' meeting in the middle of next month.

The Iraqi deputy at Arab League, Sultan El-Shady, said today in press statements that Iraq has presented a formal memorandum in this concern, saying that the "no-fly zones" imposed on northern and southern Iraq considers an invasion of Iraq.

He said Iraq asserts that this embargo came according to US and British individual decisions and is not based on any Security Council decision, thus it is illegal and forms a threat to Iraqi sovereignty, independence and regional unity, in addition to humanitarian losses, spiritual and material losses in civil installations.
