Cairo concerned by possible intensification of sanctions against Libya
Libya-Egypt-UN, Politics, 2/24/1999
Cairo expressed its concerns toward the endeavors of the U.S administration to intensify sanctions against Libya on February 26, when the United Nations Security Council is to reexamine the sanctions imposed upon Libya since April 1992.
Diplomatic sources in Cairo told ArabicNews.com today that Washington is holding communications with members of UN Security Council, especially the British, aimed at rallying support for intensifying sanctions if the Libyan suspects in the Lockerbie case are not delivered to Holland for trial before this date.
Diplomatic sources said that Cairo called on Tripoli to deprive the U.S administration of this chance after Libya received a communique from UN Secretary General Kofi Annan that included the majority of guarantees that Libya has asked for regarding the trial of the suspects and what will follow it.
