European-Palestinian cooperation not limited to economy, Schroeder Says
Palestine-European Union, Politics, 2/23/1999

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said on Monday that cooperation between the Palestinian government and the European Union was not restricted to the economic sector.

Addressing a joint news conference with Palestinian President Yasser Arafat following joint talks, Schroeder said new steps related to cooperation would be announced after the conclusion of necessary talks with other European Union states and the United States.

As to his talks with Arafat, Schroeder said they covered issues of common concern and the promotion of economic and political support to the Palestinians, as well as ways to encourage German companies invest in Palestinian territories.

He said the talks also covered the Middle East peace process, pointing out in this regard that his country and all other EU member states were in favor of implementing the signed accords without delay and without conditions.

Schroeder said he would also discuss the Middle East peace process with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak when the latter visits Bonn on Wednesday.

Arafat said his visit to Germany, the current president of the European Union, aimed at promoting the Middle East peace process.

While in Bonn, Arafat also discussed with Arab ambassadors the latest political developments in the region.
