Egyptian authorities refuse to allow Hassan El-Banna anniversary revival
Egypt, Politics, 2/23/1999
The Egyptian authorities refused to grant the family of the Muslim Brotherhood group's founder and its first leader, Hassan El-Banna, permission to revive his 50th death anniversary which was on February 12.
The son of Sheikh El-Banna said he received a note informing him of the rejection of a request he made at the beginning of the current month to Cairo's security service to allow him to construct a pavilion in the arena facing Amr Ben El-Aas mosque to commemorate the anniversary of his father's death. He said the note did not reveal the reasons for the request's refusal.
He considered this refusal a violation of the constitution, which he said states that all citizens are equal before the law. He accused the government of seeking to absolutely exclude the Muslim Brotherhood from the political and cultural arenas and to persuade people that this group no longer exists in Egyptian society.
