Algerian Army denies supporting any candidate in presidential elections
Algeria, Politics, 2/23/1999
In its address column the Algerian Army newspaper reported yesterday that the army does not interfere in any election issue except for setting out the conditions to secure the purity of the process.
The newspaper criticized statements issued by some in the political arena that the army is involved in the elections, and it renewed statements about the guarantees presented to President Liamine Zeroual by the chief of staff concerning the purity and sincerity of coming elections.
The newspaper questioned the motives behind these statements, asserting that some intend to impose their perceptions on the Algerian people and try to use the military to achieve their goals.
