Arnoun's people call for a solidarity meeting today
Lebanon, Politics, 2/23/1999
Citizens of the Lebanese town of Arnoun, annexed by the Israeli occupation forces five days ago into the occupied part of south Lebanon, have called for a solidarity meeting today with local, Arab and foreign media. This solidarity meeting aims at following up on the issue of Arnoun being occupied and declaring a program of action in this respect.
The solidarity meeting will be held in Bab al-Oloum school in al-Suloum suburb near al-Amroseyah bridge.
In Beirut, the foreign affairs committee at the Lebanese Parliament discussed the subject of Israel's annexation of the town of Arnoun to the occupied border strip of south Lebanon. In a meeting held on Monday and chaired by Parliament member Ali al-Khalil, the committee expressed its conviction that there are grave strategic dimensions behind these aggressive moves, namely Israel's rejection of the implementation of the UN resolution 425.
The committee stressed that the annexation of Arnoun aims to separate the Syrian and Lebanese tracks, to embarrass the Lebanese government, to create a new social problem and to destroy the Middle East peace process.
The committee adopted recommendations such as lodging a complaint to the UN Security Council and calling for intensive Lebanese moves and contacts with countries and international organizations in order to secure relief aid to the town of Arnoun.
