Syria-Iraq, Politics, 2/23/1999
The BBC reported on Monday that thousands of Iraqi Shiites held a demonstration in Damascus on Monday in protest of assassinating the Iraqi Shiite clergy Muhammad Sadeq al-Sader in the Iraqi city of al-Najaf.
The radio added that the Syrian authorities permitted only the Iraqis to take part in the demonstration.
Member of the political bureau of the Iraqi opposition al-Dawa party in Damascus, Jawad al-Malki, told the BBC that this demonstration was held in al-Sayedeh Zeinab (daughter of al-Imam Ali) shrine, an area that constitutes the meeting place for the Iraqis in Damascus.
