Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed said he is going to invite the Jordanian and Yemeni foreign ministers to visit Kuwait soon to resume diplomatic relations between these countries and Kuwait. This invitation is considered the first of its sort since the Gulf War. The Kuwaiti foreign minister said he will renew his invitation to Jordanian Foreign Minister Abd al-Ilah al-Khatib to visit Kuwait, knowing that al-Khatib was not able to fulfill a previous invitation due to the death of Jordan's King Hussein.

The Lebanese committee for the Abd El-Naser Prize granted the prize, worth $130,000, to Egyptian writer Mohammed Hassanein Heikel for his contributions to deepening Arab thought. Heikel announced his acceptance of the prize, which will be delivered on July 26, the anniversary of nationalizing the Suez Canal. Yet Heikel refused to accepting the financial prize and asked for the sum to be dedicated to supporting the committee's work.
