The Iranian supreme court drops death sentence of German citizens
Iran-Germany, Judicial, 2/22/1999
The Iranian Supreme Court dropped a death sentence against German businessman Helmut Hofer, who was accused of adultery with a Moslem Iranian citizen.
Judicial sources in Tehran confirmed the abolishment of the sentence, while the decision of the supreme court stated that after an investigation into the charges directed against Hofer the death penalty was dropped due to a lack of evidence. The court ordered for Hofer to be retried before another court.
Hofer (56) has been jailed in Iran since September 1997, became a Muslim after marrying a Turkish citizen years ago.
