UAE voices strong objection to Iranian measures in Abu Mousa island
United Arab Emirates-Iran, Politics, 2/22/1999
The government of the United Arab Emirates has submitted a strong objection to the Iranian government for opening a municipality house in Abu Mousa island, one of three islands which the UAE wants restored, at the entrance of the Gulf.
The UAE news agency said the UAE government sent "a memorandum of objection" to Tehran saying that the act carried out by Iranian Minister of Interior Abdul Wahid Mousa Lari on February 5 is viewed by the UAE as imposing de facto status to perpetuate Iran's occupation of Abu Mousa island, change its demographic nature and annex it by means of force to Iranian control.
The agency added that, "The UAE once again reiterates its sovereignty over Abu Mousa island and its non-recognition of any other supremacy on the island."
