Mubarak confers with Lebanese Premier
Lebanon-Egypt, Politics, 2/22/1999
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday in Cairo received Lebanese Prime Minister Salim Al-Hoss. Following the meeting, al-Hoss said that Mubarak has asserted his support for the Lebanese position which calls for Israel's complete withdrawal from the Lebanese territories, unconditionally, in implementation of UN Security Council resolution 425.
Al-Hoss stated that the Egyptian position is in compliance with the Lebanese stand in adhering to the unity of the Syrian and Lebanese tracks. He indicated Israeli attempts to single Lebanon out separately and undermine its national sovereignty.
Concerning Israel's intentions when it invaded the Lebanese city of Arnoun and annexed it to the occupied zone of south Lebanon, al-Hoss said that occupation of this village refutes categorically Israel's claims that it is ready to withdraw from Lebanon and that Israel tries to make of Lebanon a voting card in the Israeli balloting centers.
Al-Hoss asserted that Lebanon is committed to the unity of the Syrian and Lebanese tracks regarding Israel. He added that Lebanon "has once witnessed a bitter experience. It is the May 17 agreement which targeted Lebanon's unity and resulted in escalating civil war in Lebanon."
He stated that the cohesion of the Syrian and Lebanese track gives power to Lebanon. He asked for a strong Arab position in support of Lebanon against the repeated Israeli attacks on the Lebanese territories. He held Israel responsible for destroying the Middle East peace process and intensifying conditions in the Middle East.
