Spain to talk to Morocco on hiring temporary workers
Morocco-Spain, Economics, 2/20/1999

Spain said it will start talks shortly with Morocco on the hiring of temporary Moroccan workers, the Madrid-based press reported.

Spanish Labor and Social Affairs Minister Manuel Pimentel Siles told a press conference that the Spanish government is currently studying the possibility of granting foreigners temporary work permits for limited periods.

The concerned workers will be paid a global salary for the period they spend working in Spain under a juridical contract at the end of which they will return to their countries of origin, the minister said.

These workers will come from Morocco, Pimental said, adding that the experiment can later be applied to other countries.

The Spanish authorities and businessmen had called for resorting to foreign workforce to fill in the vacant posts, deserted by Spanish workers, especially in agriculture and construction.
