AL chief confers with Sudanese President
Regional-Sudan, Politics, 2/19/1999

Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid has said he seeks to purify the atmosphere of inter-Arab relations. He added that he explained with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir during their meeting in al-Khartoum on Thursday the supportive Arab role to establishing peace in southern Sudan.

The AL chief described the accusations addressed to Sudan and Egypt on alleged violations of human rights and religious repression as a "hostile campaign." Abdul Meguid said he had rejected these allegations in his contacts with Western countries.

The AL chief asserted that there are no disputes in Sudanese - Egyptian relations. He also asserted his position concerning convening an Arab summit on Iraq. He said, "There is no reason for not convening this summit in which Iraq can take part, but under the condition that such a summit will be prepared for."

Concerning the current efforts to settle the Lockerbie incident, the Arab League chief noted the role played by the Saudi and South African mediation. He asserted the need to have enough guarantees for the two suspected Libyans, taking into account Arab and Libyan interests and lifting the embargo imposed on Libya.

Abdul Meguid added that his talks with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and Foreign Minister Mustafa Othman Ismael dealt with the "complementary Arab role" in the process of establishing peace in Sudan. He made it clear that the AL supports moves to be made by Sudan to reach a peaceful settlement for southern Sudan so as to maintain Sudan's unity.
