Mubarak to visit Europe next week

It was announced in Cairo on Thursday that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will hold a European tour which will cover Italy, Germany and France, starting as of Monday and lasting for four days.

It was also said that talks during Mubarak's visit will concentrate on means of giving the Middle East peace process a push forward, developments of the Iraqi question and to gain the two countries's support for Egypt's stand concerning the partnership agreement with Europe expected to be signed in Stuttgart in April.

Well-informed sources in Cairo said that Mubarak's talks in France are to complete his talks with the French President Jacques Chirac in order to reactivate the Egyptian-French initiative to convene an international conference as well as to attempt to resume negotiations on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks. The spokesman for the Italian embassy in Cairo said that the talks the Egyptian President will hold will deal with the Egyptian, Euro-Mediterranean partnership Association and coordination concerning the questions of Somalia and Sudan.

The Italian spokesman indicated the two countries' care to ensure stability in the Middle East and the Horn of Africa.. The spokesman indicated bilateral relations between Egypt and Italy. He noted Italy's participation in the "bright star 97 exercises" and economic relations between Egypt and Italy. He said that Italy's export to Egypt represents 7.3% of its total exports whereas Italy's imports from Egypt are at 11.1% of Egyptian exports. He added that 10% of the tourists to Egypt are Italians.
