Yemeni President confers with Iraqi FM
Iraq-Yemen, Politics, 2/19/1999

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has called upon Iraq and all Arab states to halt all exchanged media attacks and resort to dialogue and joint Arab action in order to restore Arab solidarity.

During his meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf, on Thursday, the Yemeni president called for reconciliation between Iraq and the Arab states.

Al-Sahaf delivered a message to President Saleh pertaining to bilateral relations and current developments in the Iraqi arena.

Yemeni official sources told the London-based al-Hayat daily that President Saleh expressed his regret over the media campaign between Iraq and certain Arab states, saying, these campaigns "do not serve the march of Arab solidarity and obstruct efforts made to achieve reconciliation" between "the Arab brothers," on the grounds of reconciliation and openness.

The same sources added that the Yemeni president reiterated his country's stand in calling for lifting the sanctions imposed on the Iraqi people, adding that in this respect Yemen continued efforts with the Arab states after Yemen had succeeded in convening the consultative meeting of the Arab foreign ministers held recently in Cairo. The Iraqi delegation withdrew from the final session of the said conference.

The Yemeni official sources added that the message conveyed by al-Sahaf explained the latest developments in Iraq and his country's readiness to work for the success of the efforts aimed at maintaining Arab solidarity and Iraq's welcome of inter-Arab reconciliation.

Al-Sahaf arrived in Sanaa on Wednesday in the course of a tour during which he visited Mauritania, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Sudan.
