Syrian media source criticizes Jordanian statements about detainees
Syria-Jordan, Politics, 2/19/1999

A Syrian official source has criticized statements made by Jordanian Minister of the Interior Nayef al-Qadi on the "file of the Jordanian detainees."

The Syrian source asserted that such statements "express unhidden stances and are not in harmony with the positive atmospheres" that prevail between Damascus and Amman following the initiative made by President Hafez al-Assad in his participation in King Hussein's funeral on February 8, and the contacts made later on between President Hafez al-Assad and King Abdullah.

The Syrian media source said that, "raising such issues will not be in the service of the two sisterly countries and their inclination to improve their relations for serving national issues."

In earlier press statement, al-Qadi told the Jordanian paper al-Masa'eya ( the night) that the " file of the Jordanian detainee in the Syrian jails will be one of the topics to be debated in due time with the officials in Damascus."
