Spain offers Moroccans 27,000 seasonal jobs
Morocco-Spain, Economics, 2/17/1999

Spain announced on Tuesday it is offering Moroccans 27,000 seasonal jobs for which they can apply at the Spanish consulates in Morocco.

The announcement was made by Spanish secretary of state for foreign policy, Ramon De Miguel Y Egea, who visited Morocco to dedicate new offices of the Spanish consulate in Tetouan. He said the seasonal workers will enjoy all occupational guaranties, including housing, and social security.

Regarding the stringent measures enforced by Spain to limit access to the Moroccan northern town of Sebta, that is still under Spanish rule, the Spanish official said the measures are meant to restrict the entrance of Africans who use the city to emigrate illegally to Europe. He further called for intensifying the fight against illegal immigration rings, an activity that he described as "inhumane and barbarious."

He went on that the Spanish government is working to legalize the stay of Moroccans settled in Spain without the required documents, adding that the Spanish consulates in Morocco are also open to Moroccans and one of their tasks is to make Morocco more familiar to Spaniards as "a neighbor and a partner with which Spain shares history, geography, interests and aspirations."

The Spanish secretary of state further cited the various projects supported by his country to develop Morocco's northern provinces, including the building of a health center in Ksar Lekbir, improving the water supply network in Chefchaouen, revamping of a hospital in Tetouan in addition to other urban development and solid waste management projects. He said all these projects are part of Spain's Paidar-Med program (integrated action program for the development of Morocco's Mediterranean region).
