Morocco surprised at EU official's statement over fisheries agreement
Morocco-European Union, Economics, 2/16/1999

Morocco expressed on Monday "surprise" over a statement made by chief of the European Union's delegation in Rabat that Moroccco "will be the loser if it does not renew the fisheries agreement with the European Union."

A statement of the Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation department said the statement made by Lucio Guerrato to a Moroccan weekly is all the more surprising as the fisheries agreement only expires next November and there has been no contact on its replacement.

Morocco has repeatedly announced that it will not renew the fisheries agreement with the European Union and will, instead, seek new partnership formulas in a bid to protect its sea resources from over-fishing.
