Turkey-Iran, Politics, 2/16/1999

The Turkish-Iranian joint committee held its 16th meeting in Tehran on Monday, in the presence of the director general of the security affairs at the Iranian Ministry of the Interior and the Turkish Interior Ministry's secretary.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed problems facing the Iranians who travel to Syria through Turkey to visit the shrine of "Lady Zeinab," daughter of Imam Ali Bin Abi Taleb, as well as different incidents taking place on the borders between the two countries.

Chairman of the Iranian side of the committee, Hussein Mutaher, said the two sides are determined to strengthen bilateral security relations. He stressed the need to set up Turkish security points off the Iranian security points on the border between the two countries as well as to fight the smuggling of drugs and other commodities between the two countries.
