Moussa to visit Libya soon on Lockerbie crisis
Egypt-Libya, Politics, 2/15/1999
Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa will head soon to Libya to hold talks with Libyan leader Colonel Moammar Gaddafi that tackle the developments in the Lockerbie crisis in an optimistic atmosphere to close this issue and end the United Nations sanctions against Libya. Egyptian diplomatic sources expected that Moussa would visit Libya today or tomorrow, yet it was not determined whether he will go by land or by air.
Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said in a statement yesterday that progress had been made in the efforts to persuade Libya to turn over the two suspects in the Lockerbie case.
Cook said he told envoys from Saudi Arabia and South Africa to deliver a message that "imprisonment had to take place in Scotland, but we were willing to look at the involvement of the United Nations in supervising the separate prison wing. They reported late last week that that could be the basis of agreement."
He added, "I am not going to sigh with relief until the two men touch down in the Netherlands, but I am encouraged at the progress that has been made."
