Golan citizens reject Israeli ID
Syria, Politics, 2/15/1999

The Syrian citizens in the occupied Syrian Golan heights have reiterated their rejection of the Israeli identity card, which the Israeli occupation authorities have been trying to impose on them for the past seventeen years.

A general strike was staged in towns and villages in the occupied Syrian Golan to observe the anniversary of announcing the imposition of the Israeli ID on the Syrians.

Demonstrators hoisted banners condemning Israel's occupation and reiterating their close ties with their motherland, Syria.

Late in 1981, the Israeli Knesset issued a law provided for perpetuating the occupation of the Golan. The arbitrary decision led to an overwhelming people's uprising launched on February 14, 1992. The participants in the uprising stressed their adherence to Syria, their motherland, and to the Syrian national identity.
