Jordanian Speaker: Confederation with Jordan has preconditions
Jordan-Palestine, Politics, 2/15/1999
Speaker of the Jordanian Parliament, Abdul Hadi al-Majali, has asserted that Palestinian confederation with Jordan has preconditions to be attained.
He added that, "Such a confederation is illogical to be made earlier before the establishment of the Palestinian state for fears that the Jordanian side will run the risks, obligations and problems."
In statements to the Jordanian daily al-Dustour issued on Sunday, al-Majali explained: "We in Jordan did not say that we are for the confederation or for similar relations," noting that such a confederation is called for by the Palestinian side.
He continued, "Everybody in Jordan believes in the need for unity between the Jordanian and Palestinian people and nobody stands against unity. But we are with a unity which is established to survive on the grounds of completing the institutions of a Palestinian state."
