Turkey to import Egyptian gas via Syria

The Turkish news bulletin NTF said on Sunday that the Turkish government intends to open a line for importing Egyptian gas via Syria. The television report added that this measure comes following the calm prevailing in Syrian - Turkish relations following the crisis pertaining to the leader of the Kurdistani Workers Party (PKK), Abdullah Ocalan.
NTF quoted a statement by Turkish Minister of Energy Ziya Aktas as saying that Turkey is planning to import Egyptian natural gas via the Syrian and Jordanian territories. Aktas added that the Egyptian oil minister will arrive in Ankara by the end of this month in order to discuss this project.
The Turkish minister said Turkey also intends to buy Syrian natural gas and transport it to southeast Turkey.
The Turkish minister added that the Syrian government made a good impression by implementing the agreement signed with Turkey in November 1998, "Therefore, Turkey's relations with Syria are improving."
