New Jordanian government to be expected very soon
Jordan, Politics, 2/12/1999

The Jordanian government led by Prime Minister Fayez Tarawneh announced on the third and last day of receiving condolences on the death of King Hussein its determination to resign, according to tradition, perhaps as soon as today, while the Jordanian dailies started to talk about expectations concerning the new government which will be assigned by King Abdullah II.

The Jordanian opposition is preparing to present a detailed memorandum submitted by former parliament member Toujan al-Faisal to the new Jordanian King to show the opposition's viewpoints on various issues, especially the need to review the Jordanian-Israeli relations.

Meanwhile, well-informed Jordanian press sources said that Syrian President Hafez al-Assad asked Jordan's King Abdullah "to slow down normalization with Israel."

The British "Foreign Report" bulletin expected that one of the first acts of King Abdullah will be permitting the resumption of strategic cooperation with Israel, including the reopening of the Israeli intelligence station in the Jordanian capital.

A governmental source in Amman said that, "The Prime Minister will submit his resignation to King Abdullah who will decide the fate of the government."

Well-informed Jordanian sources said that King Abdullah will ask Tarawneh's government to proceed with its tasks until he decides on the next step.
