Algeria, Politics, 2/12/1999

Several Algerian dailies issued on Thursday said that the Algerian security forces discovered a collective tomb in a deserted "well" in Welad Allal in al-Mateija plane, southeast of the capital, Algiers.

The said papers reported that the security men who started to move iron bars, and stones which covered the surface of the "well" did not remove any of the corpses, but said the number of dead was estimated in the tens.

The papers added that one of the redeemed armed men informed Algerian security forces about the location of the collective tomb but no official assertion was released on Thursday in this respect.

Meanwhile, the Algerian daily al-Khabar said on Thursday that five persons were killed, one of them a member of the Armed Islamic Group, and that two others were wounded on Monday in al-Mazraa district in Tabsah province east of Algiers.
